Kids' Room Decorating Ideas: Project Nursery

Two moms started a home design site that specializes in decorating kids rooms, and we love their most recent project: They gave our writer's baby a nursery.

If you've ever been faced with decorating a baby's or kid's room, you know the feeling: You're so excited to create a whimsical getaway for your little bean, but picking a style and color scheme for the space has left you feeling paralyzed.

Do you go with the standard pink or blue? Stripes or polka dots? Modern furniture or classic silhouettes? And once you've decided on a look, how do you find the pieces you have in mind? Yep, creating a room for a tiny person can actually turn out to be a huge dilemma. Luckily, the ladies behind Project Nursery can help.

Founded in 2008 by moms, business partners and design enthusiasts Melisa Fluhr and Pamela Ginnochio, Project Nursery, an online resource for moms, is a virtual jackpot of kid-friendly design ideas, featuring hip finds for the family home, do-it-yourself projects, clever party ideas and tips on how to create an amazing kid's room on a budget.

And the Project Nursery empire is growing. Fluhr and Ginnochio recently launched Little Apple Design, which provides clients with their own personalized "e-design" based around a kid's room of their choice.

Here's how it works: Simply fill out the detailed questionnaire on the company's website and send over any photos you may have of your existing room. From there, Little Apple Design will custom create an electronic design board of 15 to 20 items, along with a list of product links for you to check out. Costs range from $50 per hour to chat with the designers over the phone to $525 for a customized design board.

Sound easy? I can tell you from personal experience that it is. As a new mother to a 10-month-old baby boy and the recent owner of a new home, I decided to try out the design service myself (the nice moms at Project Nursery waived their fee). After filling out the questionnaire, here's the design dilemma I submitted:

My family and I are about to move into a new townhouse after living in a rented apartment. In the rental, we weren't allowed to paint or hang window treatments, so I'm really looking forward to creating a baby space for my son Sam (10 months old) that I couldn't create in the old place. With that said, we want this new baby room to be somewhat gender neutral so that it can be our next baby's room -- whatever the sex! Also, because our house isn't that big, it's important to me that the room flow with the rest of the home. (In other words, no childish characters on the wall!) Any advice?

And here's what they came up with!

In planning Sam's nursery, Fluhr and Ginnochio said their top priority was to ensure that the room was designed with versatility in mind, since we planned to use the room for another baby. If our next child is a girl, the light blue, green and white palette is gender neutral and can easily be brought to the feminine side with pops of pink.

They also saved us money by working around our existing white Da Vinci Jenny Lind crib, and they picked a rocking chair, changing table and shelving unit in more modern styles so it would flow seamlessly with the other rooms in our home. On the other hand, they did accessorize the space with kid-inspired, easy-to-change items, like tree and bird wall decals and a giraffe growth chart (see more of the room below). Both added a bit of childish whimsy without having to commit to a particular theme.

The total cost of their suggestions, about $3,000. It's quite a bit more than my husband and I planned to spend, but I definitely got some really great ideas that I do plan to incorporate, like the paint choices, the sheepskin rug, the pennant decal and the bright green floor cushion and shelving units.

New Video Game Releases: May 3 - 16

Thunderous great games this week in New Video Game Releases! The summer movie season--and its video game tie-ins--is upon us, with one of the biggest to come this month. Thor: God of Thunder from Sega ties in with the latest Marvel superhero to cross the screen, the Norse god Thor. The MotorStorm franchise rolls on to its fourth installment, this time throwing players into a dystopian urban environment being torn apart by natural disasters. LEGO turns its beloved video game franchise to the Pirates of the Caribbean series, fun for all on the high seas. Marvel Comics is revving up for one heck of a summer, with the next two heroes of its forthcoming Avengers team-up arriving. The first of those two is Thor: God of Thunder (Xbox 360 and PS3 - $49.95; Wii - $39.95; DS - $29.95; 3DS - $28.00), who will arrive in theaters this may wielding his mighty hammer. The game hews closely to the classic story, having been penned by Eisner-winning Thor comic co-writer Matt Fraction himself. Film star Chris Hemsworth also lends his voice to Thor, the Norse god who must battle legions of massive foes in his bid to save the mythological world of Asgard. The third-person single-player game gives players the chance to wield Mjonir, the legendary hammer that can crack the very earth with its thunder attack, and summon down elemental forces like hurrican-force gales and devastating lightning strikes that destroy multiple enemies at once. Presented in 3D, the game allows players to scale 25-foot tall trolls via various grappling points, allowing Thor to reach and exploit their weaknesses. Players can earn Valor runes for their achievements, which allow them to choose and upgrade their abilities, armor, attacks and weapons. The game will feature classic enemies from the comic series, including Ulik, Surtur, Ymir, and more. The MotorStorm franchise of wild, adrenaline-fueled racing games roars to its fourth installment, and third exclusively for the PlayStation 3. MotorStorm Apocalypse (PS3 - $56.99) boasts a more compelling story element than its three predecessors, viewing a catastrophe around the events of the MotorStorm Festival set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic urban California through the eyes of three of its participants: rookie Mash, pro Tyler, and grizzled vet Big Dog. In the style of landmark racing game Split Second, the festival is in the throes of a series of natural disasters that literally change the face of the earth while the racers are in the middle of a competition. The festival's beleaguered city--modeled after the Bay Area--is twisted and ripped apart in terrible upheavals that buckle bridges, collapse buildings, and tear gashes in the ground even as racers make their way around the courses. Meanwhile, unrest in the city forces the racers to have to deal with attacks and obstacles from pissed-off rioters and looters, who will try to ram them with cars or kill them with firearms. At the same time, a private military tries desperately to keep order, again throwing a deadly wrench in the racing. Racers can choose from five classes of vehicles--supercar, superbike, muscle car, chopper, and hot hatch--and can customize not only their own vehicles to boost performance, defensive, and offensive capabilities, but also create custom rules for online multiplayer tournaments. Players will also enjoy a new feature that allows them to cool their boost temperature gauges while in mid-air, simply by releasing the throttle. Hang on for a wild ride. The lovable LEGO series of video game film adaptations swashbuckles into a new beloved film franchise. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (XBox 360, PS3 and Wii - $47.99; 3DS - $39.99; PC, PSP and DS - $28.99) from Disney Interactive Studios brings all the rip-roaring, high seas fun of the box office smash hit Disney films to the console and PC. Players get to jump into storylines and over 70 characters from each of the three previous Pirates of the Caribbean films (and a few new ones), as well as the upcoming fourth installment On Strage Tides. The gameplay is the familiar LEGO style, in which players must use the varied talents of the characters to defeat enemies and solve simple but fun puzzles over the course of 20 levels. Sword-fighting is the main conceit of this game, with 3DS players able to use the StreetPass feature to engage in swordfights with other nearby 3DS players. As usual, the game allows for two-player co-op action, with the second player able to drop in/drop out any time they wish. And, as usual, the game offers tons of replay value, as unlockable characters can go back through cleared levels to pick up a variety of hidden treasures. Bethesda Softworks presents a dynamic and groundbreaking game that pits two factions against one another for dwindling resources on a massive floating city. In Brink (XBox 360, PS3 and PC), a near-future earth has seen its oceans rise to catastrophic levels. The floating, sustainable, self-sufficient green habitat known as The Ark--originally home to a small population of scientists and pioneers--has taken on a huge population of refugees. Tensions between the original residents and the refugees have risen to a breaking point, as the Ark's leaders have been forced to hire security forces to hold off attacks from the so-called Resistance--refugees who believe that resources are being withheld from them. Players can choose either side of the desperate conflict, with no clear good or evil side. Players can almost endlessly customize their hero, choosing from four unique classes--Soldier, Engineer, Medic, or Operative--and using their skills to build a parkour-focused warrior that navigates around the game's terrain in mind-blowing ways. FPS is taken to new territory thanks to the SMART (Smooth Movement Around Random Terrain) feature, that intuitively and dynamically responds to different physical obstacles. Gameplay boasts a visionary, seamless blend of singleplayer and online multiplayer, as the game's story can be moved through by only one player, or up to eight cooperatively, or competitively with 8 vs. 8 factions. The fate of humanity hangs in the balance!

Cockfighting Discovered at Children's Party

If you're planning a party for a child, it's important to think about games.

Pinatas are fun, and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey is a perennial favorite. However, to really spice things up, you might want to take a tip from some folks in Dayton, Texas, and treat the boys and girls to the thrills of illegal cockfighting.

The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia reports Liberty County sheriff's deputies were not so thrilled when they found cockfighting going on at children's party in Dayton -- about 40 miles northeast of Houston.

As police approached the party, the newspaper reports, suspects began fleeing to their cars. Some reportedly crashed into each other and through a wooden fence to make their get-away.

According to the Herald, children cried, standing near a water slide, where they found dead and dying birds -- some drenched with blood -- a few feet away.

Live birds were reportedly found pinned in cages throughout the property, some armed with steel blades attached to their beaks.

Inside a small barn, officers discovered scales, tags, entry slips and other evidence of cockfights.

The Herald reports officials from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to the scene and rescued 48 birds, as well as a horse and two dogs in poor condition.

Officers arrested Jose Lara and Irasema Ramirez at the scene for failing to identify themselves and for interfering with a law enforcement investigation. The Herald reports additional charges and more arrests might be filed as the investigation continues.

Opinion: Bin Laden Dies, America Celebrates, a Parent Grapples

My son wants revenge.

He thinks Americans should kick and spit on Osama bin Laden's dead body before it is hung upside down on meat hooks at Ground Zero -- mirroring what Italians did with the body of Benito Mussolini at Piazza Loreto almost exactly 66 years ago.

I understand his feelings. They make me a little queasy, but I understand.

He is swept up in the national euphoria following the news that justice -- and U.S. forces -- finally caught up with the man who masterminded the death of thousands of innocent people on Sept. 11, 2001.

My son has lived almost his entire life in the shadow of 9/11. He knows Ian Tawney, a dear friend from our hometown, died in Afghanistan because of what bin Laden's minions did that day.

He heard me speak of Rick Guadagno, a gentle soul who managed a local wildlife refuge, who died on United Airlines Flight 93. That was the flight where passengers overpowered the terrorists and sacrificed themselves to prevent another attack.

My son knows Ian, Rick and thousands of other people would be alive today if not for the man U.S. forces killed May 1.

And he is happy bin Laden is dead. Me, too. So are countless millions across the world. Bin Laden was a malignant tick our world was finally able to shrug off.

My son asked how we will dispose of the body. I explained he was to be buried at sea in a manner rightly respectful of Muslim beliefs and practices.

"Rightly respectful?" Was I mad? How could I say such a thing? Bin Laden was the worst villain humanity has produced since Adolf Hitler. His body should be shown the same respect he showed the bodies of the people in the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

I reminded him of something John McCain once said about terrorists. "It's not about how they are. It's about who we are."

And we are the United States of America.

We stand for something. We stand for something when standing for something is the most difficult thing to do. We don't capitulate to anger and vengeance. When we treat our enemies with greater justice than they would treat us, we show the world (and ourselves) that we have the courage to pay more than lip service to our ideals.

It's not just America that stands for something. So, apparently, do I. I asked my son how he would feel if I talked about how I wanted to desecrate bin Laden's body. He said he would hate it. "That's not you," he said.

Exactly. We may have our private expressions of vengeance. But, like children, we want those we trust to mete out justice to be above such bitter motivations. We expect better things from our parents ... and our nation.

Yes, bin Laden needed to be exterminated like a rabid rodent. And, yes, his death is cause for a certain amount of elation. Yet, let us not get too bloodthirsty at the necessity of taking a life.

Let us not lose ourselves in the revelry.

Rather, I tell my son, be glad that bin Laden can no longer hurt anyone else. We have wiped his evil from the earth. Let us replace it with light rather than continued darkness.

"Rot in hell" screams this morning's front page in the New York Post. I told my son I understand the sentiment. But rather than praying for bin Laden to rot in hell, I would rather save my prayers for Ian, Rick and the thousands of other people who died nearly 10 years ago.

May their souls rest in peace.
